CURRIED CABBAGE

Sauteed cabbage with butter is comforting to me. I love it a lot during winter when cabbage is cheap and fresh. It’s so inexpensive, delicious, and filling. I love to come up with new versions of this recipe. This Curried Cabbage version has many flavours, bright colours, and textures. This is extra-comfortable and ideal for winter. This delicious dish can be served in many ways. Read on to find out how you can make curried cabbage!

What kind of curry powder should I use?

Although brands can be quite different, you can use any curry powder in this recipe. You can choose your preferred heat level for curry powders. Some are hot, and some are mild. This Easy Homemade Curried Powder recipe is available at Spicitupp.com.

HOW TO SERVE CURRIED CABBAGE

This curried cabbage was delicious in many different ways. It can be served as-is or topped with warm rice. You can also make it into Fried Cabbage and Noodles by adding 8 oz. You can also make your cooked egg noodles. To cover the noodles, you will need to add butter and salt. A fried egg is also a great option. 😉

CAN I ADD MEAT TO THIS?

Yep! This curried cabbage would be great with ground beef. You will need to brown 1/2 to 1 pound of ground beef in the pan before adding the Ginger and garlic. Then, you can continue with the recipe as usual.

Is THIS A CURRIED CABBAGE SAUCY

This dish does not contain sauce. It’s sauteed cabbage and curry seasoning. You can add a cup of vegetable broth or coconut cream if you prefer a saucy recipe that you can serve with bread or drizzle over rice.

CAN I FIRE CURRIED CABBAGE

This recipe would freeze fine. The vegetables have already been fried and are soft, so there will not be any loss of texture when frozen or thawed. There is no sauce to keep it moist in the fridge, so this is the main problem.

CAN I SKIP CILANTRO

Yes. Yes. I love cilantro in curry dishes. But if you don’t like cilantro, I recommend adding some sliced green onions. Although their flavours are not the same, both add a freshness to the dish that I think is a nice contrast to the deeply cooked cabbage flavour.

CURRIED CABBAGE

This easy Curried Cabbage Saute is a filling and inexpensive dish full of vibrant colours, flavours, and healthy vegetables.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cloves of garlic ($0.16)
  • 1 tsp grated fresh Ginger ($0.10)
  • 1 yellow onion (0.32)
  • 4 carrots (about 1/2 lb. ($0.45)
  • 1/2 head cabbage (4 cups cut) ($1.28)
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil ($0.32)
  • 2 Tbsp curry (mild, hot) ($0.60
  • 1 cup frozen peas (0.38)
  • 1 Tbsp butter ($0.09)
  • Salt and pepper to your liking ($0.05).
  • 1 handful of cilantro ($0.20)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preparing the vegetables ahead of time will ensure they are ready for use when you need them. Grate the Ginger and chop the garlic. Cut the onion into slices, then peel and cut the carrots. Slice the cabbage in half and remove the core.
  • In a large saucepan, combine the olive oil, garlic, Ginger, and water. Sauté the Ginger and garlic on medium heat for approximately one minute. Then add the curry powder to the pot and cook for another minute.
  • Sauté the chopped onions in the pot for 2 to 3 minutes or until they begin to soften.
  • Add the cabbage, carrots, 1/4 cup of water, and a pinch of salt. Mix to combine the ingredients and remove any browned bits from the bottom of your pot. Cook the vegetables and cabbage over medium heat for 15 minutes or until tender. If the pot becomes dry or, the spices stick to the bottom, add a tablespoon of water.
  • After the cabbage has softened, add the frozen beans. Heat for 1-2 minutes. Stir. After the peas have been heated, add the butter to the pot and stir until it has melted and coated them. Season generously with salt, pepper and freshly chopped rosemary. Just before serving, garnish with fresh cilantro.
